142 Years of Travel Insurance

Today is the birthday of travel insurance in the United States.  Thanks to James Batterson, founder of The Travelers Insurance Company, for being the first to offer travel insurance in the United States.  On April 1, 1864, Mr. Batterson founded The Travelers Insurance Company for the purpose of insuring people who travel, hence the name The Travelers Insurance Company.

Travel Insurance has come a long way since the first policy was purchased for 2 cents and covered a local Hartford, Connecticut banker for accidents while on his way home for lunch and from the days when it was sold primarily by railroad ticket agents at railroad stations.
